Heather, Jude, Inge, Sylvia and Sue joined forces with Pittwater Pinks from NSW and Snapdragons from Redcliff in Queensland to participate in the highly popular annual Ord River Marathon in Western Australia on the Queens’ birthday weekend.
Organised by Kununurra Dragon Boat Club, the event began at 7 am and finished at 4.30 pm with all boats gathered to cross the finish line together.
Eight teams from Queensland, NSW, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory participated in the 55 kilometre journey down the winding Ord River from Lake Argyle to Kununurra.
With a sunny sky and the temperature at 28 degrees, it was a perfect day for the paddle although the strong easterly wind apparently did provide some challenges for the sweeps. Our paddlers reported that the Ord River is just magnificent and the scenery was simply breathtaking. only one crocodile was spotted.
The organisation of the event by the Kununurra Dragon Boat Club was brilliant, with meal stops, great food to keep the paddlers going during the 9 hour marathon and wine at champagne at the finish.
The marathon was physically challenging and a test of personal endurance, but as they had trained hard for several weeks leading up to the event and were well prepared, ‘the Wagga girls never put up their paddles’. Well done ladies, we're proud of you!
